I realized that technology, no matter how advanced, must always have a human safeguard.
I developed and filed U.S. Patent 4,846,831: a manual backup drive for the artificial heart. It was a system that allowed a human to manually pump the device if the automated driver failed. It was the ultimate failsafe, a literal "hands-on" approach to keeping a patient alive. It proved that in the loop of advanced technology, the human component is not obsolete; it is the final line of defense.
